In the rush of back to school preparations, we sometimes forget that our gardens need to be prepared for the fall, too! Here are a few late summer garden tasks that can keep your yard and garden beautiful through the fall and into cooler weather.
Clean up the yard:
When the kids go back to school and leave the swing set empty for most of the day, you’ll probably notice that your playground edging could use a little refurbishing! Our playground borders are attractive and easy to install, helping to section off the ground cover so it stays intact throughout the year.
Close up the sandbox:
Now that your outdoor sandbox isn’t occupied all day, you may wish to close it up. Dry, clean sand can last a year, or a couple of warm weather seasons, and performing these tasks will help ensure your sandbox stays clean for next year:
- Wet sand harbors bacteria, so you’ll want to make sure it’s all dried out. Turn the sand by shoveling bottom layers up and over the top, then let it dry in the sun.
- You may also want to sift the sand using a colander or strainer so you can find debris and remove it.
- Use one of our sandbox covers to keep pests, water and yard debris out; available in several sizes, they are the perfect way to cover and store sandboxes during the off-season.
Protect the garden:
Garden protection is always important, but most especially when cool weather approaches. Make sure you mend or replace your vegetable garden fencing to keep rodents and other garden pests out. You don’t want animals foraging for their winter food supply in your garden! You can also lay down extra mulch and use our easy-to-install landscape edging to help keep it in place when the storms blow.
Maintain your greens:
Summer’s green lawns begin to brown a little as fall approaches, but you can still dress up your yard with lawn edging. Our composite lawn borders add an attractive element to your yard, and they’re also more durable than plastic lawn edging. You can also trim your bushes and protect your trees with our tree edging, which not only look beautiful, they provide additional room for topsoil and mulch at the base of your tree. All these tasks will help keep your greens evergreen through months of cooler weather.
We hope these tips will help you transition your yard and garden for the seasonal changes in your area. Now it’s time to go back to school!
